Celebrating LBGTQIA+ Pride Month
LGBTQIA+ Pride Month is commemorated each year in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, that lasted for six days, in New York City. The uprising of Stonewall Inn bar patrons and neighborhood residents occurred in response to ongoing police harassment of gay, lesbian and transgender individuals at the club located in Greenwich Village. The riots were a catalyst for increased visibility and activism of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Today, LGBTQIA+ Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate LGBTQIA+ culture, achievements and activism through a series of organized activities including film festivals, art exhibit marches, concerts and more. Through these efforts, the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies also aim to increase awareness of ongoing issues of inequality.
One of the most iconic symbols of Pride is the rainbow flag created by artist Gilbert Baker. This flag symbolizes social equality, individuality and support. A recent variant of the flag includes eight colors, each color representing a different meaning: black (diversity), brown (inclusivity), red (life), orange (healing), yellow (sunlight), green (nature), blue (harmony) and purple (spirit).
